if you’re interested, this person is trying to organize a food/meal drive for elementery school kids in Ferguson.
schools in Ferguson have been closed since Monday and that’s where a LOT of the kids in Ferguson get their food from, to explain how important this is.
This is really excellent, and teases out something that hurt me to see during graduate school, where my field of study was obsessed with two things, conceptually: either with what one professor termed “the revolutionary microgesture,” or with shenanigans that were all about a decontextualized** shockpolitik.
The structures of either type of work resist politics-inflected critique through academic remove, but what really offends is the idea that marginalized groups, whose condition is being paternalistically, uh, “artivisted” (sorry), don’t get the joke/are being humorless/airless/etc.
**By which I mean, “political work by hwite people that is performed or dissected for primarily hwite audiences and then dissected endlessly and tautologically by hwite people — and archly, though not as archly as everyone performing said archness imagines.”
